Most indicator problems on MetaTrader come down to a handful of causes: a file in the wrong folder, a mismatch between MetaTrader 4 and 5, a setting switched off, or a tool nobody tested before it went on a live chart. This page covers the whole workflow in order, from picking a file to keeping alerts running, and points to a detailed guide for each step. At Signal Ledger we assume you want to understand what is on your chart, not just make it appear.

What a MetaTrader indicator actually is

An indicator is a small program that reads price (and sometimes volume) data and draws something on the chart or in a sub-window: a moving average, an oscillator, arrows, zones. Indicators display information. They don't place trades unless they are bundled with an Expert Advisor, which is a different type of program. If a product page blurs that line, treat it as a warning sign.

Custom indicators arrive as files, and the extension tells you which platform they belong to:

ExtensionPlatformWhat it is
.mq4MetaTrader 4Readable source code; must be compiled
.ex4MetaTrader 4Compiled, ready to run; source is not visible
.mq5MetaTrader 5Readable source code; must be compiled
.ex5MetaTrader 5Compiled, ready to run; source is not visible

The 4 and 5 formats are not interchangeable. Renaming a file does not convert it.

The setup workflow, in order

  1. Confirm the platform. Check whether you are running MT4 or MT5 before downloading anything. The file extension must match.
  2. Get the file from a source you can verify. Compiled files can't be inspected, so the source matters. Check the official site for current details and terms.
  3. Install it. In general, you open the terminal's data folder (File > Open Data Folder), place the file in the correct Indicators subfolder, then refresh or restart. The exact steps, including compiling source files, are in How to Install a Custom Indicator in MetaTrader 4 and 5: .ex4, .mq4, .ex5 and .mq5 Files Step by Step.
  4. Attach it to a chart from the Navigator panel and review its input parameters before accepting the defaults.
  5. Save the arrangement as a template so you don't rebuild it every time.
  6. Test on a demo account before any live decision relies on it.

MT4 or MT5: pick before you collect indicators

Many traders hit trouble here. A large library of indicators exists for MT4, and many are not available for MT5, and vice versa. Your broker may also offer only one platform for certain account types or instruments. Before you build a setup, check which platform your preferred tools support.

Our guide MetaTrader 4 vs MetaTrader 5 for Indicator Users: Compatibility, Conversion and Which Platform to Choose covers what carries over, what doesn't, and why conversion usually means rewriting code rather than flipping a switch. If you only have a compiled file, you generally can't convert it yourself.

Settings, templates and profiles

Defaults are often a starting point, not a recommendation. A 14-period oscillator is a convention, not a law. Change one input at a time, and note what you changed and why. If you adjust settings until the past looks perfect, you are likely curve-fitting, and the chart will look worse going forward.

Once a layout works for you, save it. Templates store indicators and their settings for a single chart; profiles store a group of open charts. Both can be copied between machines. The process, including what is and isn't saved, is in MetaTrader Templates, Profiles and Saved Settings: How to Save, Reuse and Transfer Your Indicator Setup.

Alerts: useful, but easy to misconfigure

Alerts let you step away from the screen. MetaTrader supports pop-ups and sounds locally, plus email and mobile push notifications once you configure them in the terminal options. Two points catch people out:

Setup details are in How to Set Up Indicator Alerts in MetaTrader: Pop-Up, Sound, Email and Mobile Push Notifications. For the always-on question, read Do you need a VPS to keep MetaTrader indicator alerts running 24/7? before paying for hosting you may not need.

When an indicator won't show or work

Work through the likely causes in order of how often they occur:

The full diagnostic path is in MetaTrader Indicator Not Showing or Not Working? Fixing Common Errors Step by Step.

What about mobile?

Many traders assume their desktop setup will follow them to their phone. Generally it doesn't work that way, since the mobile apps are far more limited than the desktop terminals. We explain what's possible, and the workarounds, in Can you add custom indicators to the MetaTrader 4 or 5 mobile app?

Test before you trust

An indicator is a lens on past price, not a forecast. No indicator, however polished its marketing, can promise profits, and trading leveraged products such as forex carries a real risk of losing money, potentially more than you expected. Nothing here is personalised financial advice. If you're unsure whether leveraged trading suits your circumstances, consider speaking with a licensed financial professional.

A sensible testing routine:

We cover this in more depth in Testing & Using Indicators Safely.

Choosing what goes on the chart

More indicators rarely mean better decisions. Several tools measuring the same thing (three momentum oscillators, say) simply repeat one signal. A cleaner approach is one tool for trend direction, one for momentum or timing, and price itself. If you want the concepts first, start with Trend & Momentum Indicators Explained. Shorter timeframes add noise, costs and speed requirements, which we address in Scalping Indicators & Short-Term Strategies.

When you're ready to compare specific products, use Forex Indicator Reviews & Comparisons. Prices, features, trial terms and refund policies change, so confirm the current details on each vendor's official site before you buy or download anything.
