Most indicator problems in MetaTrader come down to a short list of causes: the file is in the wrong folder, it was built for the other platform version, the platform needs a refresh, or a setting is blocking it. Work through the checks below in order. They go from fastest to slowest, so you can often stop early.

Start Here: Identify What "Not Working" Means

The fix depends on the symptom, so pin it down first.

Step 1: Confirm the File Type Matches Your Platform

This is the most common cause. MetaTrader 4 uses .mq4 (source) and .ex4 (compiled) files. MetaTrader 5 uses .mq5 and .ex5. They are not interchangeable, and renaming an extension does nothing useful. If you are unsure which platform a file belongs to, read MetaTrader 4 vs MetaTrader 5 for Indicator Users: Compatibility, Conversion and Which Platform to Choose.

Converting source code between versions is sometimes possible but often needs manual edits. A compiled .ex4 or .ex5 file cannot be converted at all without the source.

Step 2: Check the Installation Location

  1. In MetaTrader, choose File > Open Data Folder.
  2. Open MQL4 (or MQL5) and then Indicators.
  3. Confirm your file sits there, not in Experts or Scripts.
  4. Restart the platform, or right-click the Navigator and choose Refresh.

Be careful with multiple installations. If you have several terminals from different brokers, each has its own data folder, and a file placed in one will not appear in another. The full process is in How to Install a Custom Indicator in MetaTrader 4 and 5. Mac users have extra wrinkles, covered in How do you install MetaTrader custom indicators on a Mac?

Step 3: Uncompiled Source Files

If you only have a .mq4 or .mq5 file, it may need compiling. Open it in MetaEditor (press F4) and click Compile. Check the Errors tab at the bottom. Compile errors usually mean the code targets a different platform version, or relies on an include file or library that is missing. Do not edit code you do not understand and then trade on it. Test on a demo account first.

Step 4: Check Platform Permissions

Go to Tools > Options > Expert Advisors. Some indicators need Allow DLL imports, and some need Allow WebRequest for specific URLs. Enable these only for files from a source you trust, since DLLs can run arbitrary code on your computer. If you cannot verify the source, leave them off and accept that the indicator may not run.

Also check the AutoTrading button. It mainly affects expert advisors, but some indicator-style tools that place alerts or orders depend on it.

Step 5: Indicator Loaded but Invisible

Check the basics

Check the timeframe and symbol

Some indicators are built for specific timeframes or instruments. If the inputs reference a symbol your broker names differently (for example a suffix on the ticker), the data may come back empty. See Will a MetaTrader indicator work with any broker? for how broker differences affect this.

Step 6: Alerts Not Firing

An indicator may draw correctly and still stay silent. Check that the alert option is enabled in its inputs, that sound and push settings are configured in Tools > Options, and that the platform is actually running. Alerts only fire while the terminal is open and connected. Our guides on setting up indicator alerts and on whether you need a VPS cover this in detail.

Step 7: Mobile App Limits

If you are trying to load a custom file on a phone, that is likely the problem. The mobile apps do not accept custom indicator files in the way the desktop versions do. Details are in Can you add custom indicators to the MetaTrader 4 or 5 mobile app?

Step 8: Settings Lost or Behaving Oddly

If an indicator worked yesterday and not today, a corrupted template or profile may be responsible. Try attaching it to a fresh chart. If it works there, the old template is the culprit. Learn to save and restore clean setups in MetaTrader Templates, Profiles and Saved Settings.

Read the Logs

The Experts and Journal tabs in the Terminal window usually name the actual error. Search that exact message rather than guessing.

A Candid Caveat

A working indicator is not a useful indicator. Getting one to display only proves the software runs. It does not show that the signals have any edge, and many repainting or poorly tested tools look good on past data. Test on a demo account and judge the logic before risking money. Trading carries risk of loss, and nothing here is financial advice.
