You spend an hour tuning an indicator setup: the right periods, colors you can read at a glance, a clean layout. Then you open a new chart, or a new computer, and it is gone. MetaTrader has several ways to save and move that work, but they overlap and each one has limits. This guide explains what each one stores, how to use it, and where it falls short. For the wider context, see MetaTrader Indicator Setup & Tutorials.
Templates, Profiles and Saved Settings: What's the Difference?
People use these terms loosely, so here is the practical split:
- Template (.tpl): one chart's appearance and contents: indicators with their inputs, colors, chart type, scale, and in many cases attached Expert Advisors. It does not store the symbol's history or the indicator files themselves.
- Profile: a saved set of open charts, meaning which symbols and timeframes are open and how they are arranged. Each chart keeps its own settings within the profile.
- Indicator input presets (.set files): a saved list of input values for a single indicator, loaded from the indicator's Inputs tab.
Think of it this way: a template is a chart's look, a profile is your workspace, and a .set file is one indicator's numbers.
Saving and Loading a Template
- Build the chart the way you want it: add indicators, set inputs, adjust colors and scale.
- Right-click the chart, choose Template, then Save Template.
- Name it something descriptive, such as "trend-h4-clean" rather than "test2".
- To reuse it, open another chart, right-click, choose Template, and pick the file.
Loading a template replaces what is on the target chart, so any existing indicators there are removed. Save first if the chart matters.
The default template
A template saved with the name default is applied to every new chart you open. That is convenient, but it also means a cluttered default quietly follows you everywhere. Keep it minimal.
Using Profiles for a Whole Workspace
In the File menu, look for Profiles, then save the current arrangement under a name. This suits a routine such as a "London session" profile with a few pairs on one timeframe, and a "weekly review" profile with higher timeframes. Switching profiles reopens those charts as they were saved.
One caution: profiles are tied to what is open, so if you close a chart and then save over a profile, the old layout is gone. Save under a new name when experimenting.
Saving Indicator Inputs as .set Files
When you attach an indicator, the Inputs tab usually has Save and Load buttons. Saving creates a .set file you can reapply later. This is useful when you test several parameter variations of the same indicator and want to switch between them without retyping. It is also the lightest thing to share with a colleague, since it is a small text-based file with only numbers.

This is where people get caught. Templates reference indicators by name, but they do not contain the indicator files. If you move a template alone, the chart will load without the custom indicator, or show an error.
- In MetaTrader, choose File > Open Data Folder.
- Copy your template files from the templates folder (in the profiles folder for saved profiles).
- Copy any custom indicators from the MQL4/Indicators or MQL5/Indicators folder.
- Paste them into the same folders on the new installation, then restart the platform.
If the indicator still does not load, the cause is usually a file mismatch or a missing dependency. Work through MetaTrader Indicator Not Showing or Not Working? and review the install steps in How to Install a Custom Indicator in MetaTrader 4 and 5.
What Will and Won't Carry Over
| Item | Saved in template? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Indicator inputs and colors | Yes | Indicator file must exist on the target machine |
| Indicator file (.ex4/.ex5) | No | Copy manually |
| Chart colors and type | Yes | Applies to the chart you load it on |
| Drawn objects (lines, text) | Often yes | Check the result after loading |
| Alert settings | Depends | Terminal-level email and push setup is not in the template; see the alerts guide |
| Symbol and timeframe | Not reliably | Profiles hold these better |
Platform and Broker Limits
- MT4 and MT5 are not interchangeable. Template files from one will not work in the other, and indicators need the matching version. See MetaTrader 4 vs MetaTrader 5 for Indicator Users.
- Mobile is limited. The mobile apps do not load your desktop templates or custom indicators in the same way. Details are in this FAQ.
- Mac users have a different folder structure; see the Mac guide.
- Broker differences such as symbol suffixes can affect how a template behaves. See whether an indicator works with any broker.
- Running 24/7: templates do not keep the platform open. For continuous alerts, read the VPS question.
Habits That Save Trouble
- Keep a backup folder with templates, .set files and indicator files together.
- Use consistent names that include timeframe and purpose.
- Test a transferred setup on a demo account before relying on it.
- Do not assume that a setup saved across machines will look identical; screen resolution and broker data can change the picture.
Saving a setup preserves your workflow, not your results. A tidy template does not make an indicator more reliable, so judge any tool on its own merits. If you are comparing indicators to add to your templates, check our review and comparison pages, and confirm current details on each official site.
