Indicator alerts exist so you don't have to stare at a chart all day. They only work if you know which kind you're using and what keeps them running. This guide covers the four alert channels in MetaTrader (pop-up, sound, email and mobile push), how to set each up, and where each one tends to fail. For broader setup material, see MetaTrader Indicator Setup & Tutorials.
First, understand where alerts come from
There are two separate things people call "alerts," and mixing them up causes most of the confusion.
- Indicator-coded alerts: the indicator's code calls a function (such as Alert, PlaySound, SendMail or SendNotification) when its condition is met. Whether you get a pop-up, sound, email or push depends on what the developer built in, and usually on options in the indicator's Inputs tab.
- Platform price alerts: MetaTrader's built-in Alerts tab in the Toolbox (Terminal) window. These trigger on price or simple conditions, not on custom indicator logic.
If an indicator has no alert code, you can't enable alerts on it through settings. Check its Inputs tab first, since many indicators include toggles such as "Popup alert," "Sound alert," "Email alert" and "Push notification." The exact names vary by developer.
Pop-up and sound alerts
Steps
- Make sure the indicator is installed and working. If not, see how to install a custom indicator in MetaTrader 4 and 5.
- Drag the indicator onto a chart, or double-click it in the Navigator, to open its settings.
- On the Inputs tab, switch the pop-up and sound options to true (or enabled).
- Open Tools > Options > Events and tick Enable sounds if you want audio. Confirm your computer volume isn't muted.
- Check that AutoTrading or Algo Trading is not blocking things. Some indicators need "Allow DLL imports" or similar permissions, depending on how they're written.
Tradeoffs
Pop-ups are immediate but easy to miss if the terminal is minimized behind other windows. Sound helps, but a repeating alert on a fast timeframe becomes noise within an hour. Many indicators alert on every tick while a condition holds, so test on a demo chart before you rely on one.
Email alerts
- Go to Tools > Options > Email and tick Enable.
- Enter your SMTP server, login, password, and the "from" and "to" addresses. Use the settings your email provider documents. Many providers require an app-specific password rather than your normal one.
- Click Test. A message should land in your inbox; check spam.
- Enable the email option in the indicator's Inputs.
Tradeoff: email is useful as a record, but delivery can lag, so it's a poor choice for time-sensitive entries. Treat the SMTP password as sensitive and consider a dedicated mailbox.
Mobile push notifications
- Install the MetaTrader app on your phone and open Settings > Chat and Messages (or similar) to find your MetaQuotes ID.
- On the desktop terminal, go to Tools > Options > Notifications, tick Enable Push Notifications and paste the ID.
- Click Test and check your phone.
- Enable the push option in the indicator's Inputs.
Important: the phone only receives the message. The indicator still runs on your desktop terminal. The mobile app generally can't run custom indicators; see whether you can add custom indicators to the mobile app. Platform notification limits and behavior can change, so check MetaQuotes documentation if messages stop arriving.

| Channel | Best for | Main weakness | Setup effort |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pop-up | Active chart watching | Missed if you're away | Low |
| Sound | Background awareness | Noisy, easily muted | Low |
| Logging and review | Possible delays, SMTP setup | Medium | |
| Mobile push | Away from your desk | Needs desktop terminal running | Medium |
Keeping alerts running
An alert only fires while the terminal is open, connected, and the chart with the indicator is loaded. A sleeping laptop means silent alerts. Some traders use a hosted server to avoid this; whether you need one depends on your habits, as covered in do you need a VPS for indicator alerts. Once your charts are arranged, save them as a template or profile so a restart doesn't wipe your setup: saving and reusing indicator setups.
When alerts don't fire
- Check the Experts and Journal tabs for error messages.
- Confirm the indicator is actually loaded and drawing. If not, use the indicator troubleshooting guide.
- Check whether the file matches your platform version; MT4 and MT5 files are not interchangeable (see MT4 vs MT5 compatibility).
- Some brokers' symbol names or data feeds can affect behavior; see whether an indicator works with any broker.
- On a Mac, install paths and wrappers differ: custom indicators on Mac.
A sober note on alerts and trading
An alert is a prompt to look at a chart, not a reason to trade. Indicators can signal late, repaint, or fire in choppy conditions, and none of this predicts results. Trading leveraged products carries real risk of loss; consider speaking with a licensed financial professional if you're unsure whether it suits you.
Choosing an indicator with alerts built in
If you're shopping for indicators, check whether alerts are included, which channels they cover, and which platform version they support. Check our review and comparison pages for how options stack up, and confirm current features and pricing on each developer's official site before buying.
