Open MetaTrader on your Mac, go to File → Open Data Folder, and copy your indicator file into MQL4/Indicators (MT4) or MQL5/Indicators (MT5). Then restart the platform or right-click Navigator and choose Refresh, and the indicator should appear under Custom Indicators. The file type must match the platform: .ex4 or .mq4 for MT4, .ex5 or .mq5 for MT5.
Step by step
- Check the extension. MT4 will not run .ex5 files, and MT5 will not run .ex4 files. If you are unsure which platform you need, see MetaTrader 4 vs MetaTrader 5 for Indicator Users.
- In MetaTrader, click File → Open Data Folder. A Finder window opens. On most Mac installs this sits inside a Wine-based wrapper, so the path looks odd. That is normal, so use the menu rather than hunting for it.
- Open MQL4 → Indicators (or MQL5 → Indicators) and drop the file in.
- Restart MetaTrader, or right-click in the Navigator panel and select Refresh.
- Drag the indicator from Navigator onto a chart, check the inputs, and click OK.
Mac-specific things to know
- Source files (.mq4/.mq5) need compiling. Open them in MetaEditor and press Compile (F7). The editor shows any errors. A compiled .ex4/.ex5 needs no extra step.
- Installation method varies. Some brokers provide a Mac app, others rely on a Wine-based wrapper. The steps above are the same, but folder locations differ, so always use Open Data Folder.
- DLL-dependent indicators can behave differently under Wine. If a vendor's indicator requires DLLs, check their documentation for Mac support before relying on it.

The usual causes are the wrong folder, a platform mismatch, a file that was never compiled, or "Allow DLL imports" being switched off when the indicator needs it. Work through MetaTrader Indicator Not Showing or Not Working? for a fuller checklist. Indicator behavior can also depend on your broker's data feed, which is covered in Will a MetaTrader indicator work with any broker?
Before you pay for an indicator
Confirm Mac compatibility, supported platform version and current terms on the vendor's official site, not from a sales page summary or a third-party claim. An indicator that installs cleanly is not evidence that it helps your trading. Test it on a demo account first.
