There is no single realistic number, because win rate and profit factor depend on the strategy's reward-to-risk ratio, the market, and the costs. As a rough guide, many sound systems land somewhere around 40-60% wins and a profit factor between about 1.1 and 1.8 after spreads and commissions. Treat a result far above that as a reason to look for errors, not a reason to celebrate. These are general rules of thumb, not guarantees or published benchmarks.
Why win rate alone tells you little
Win rate only means something alongside average win and average loss. A trend-following setup might win 35% of the time and still be profitable if winners are three times the size of losers. A scalper might win 80% and still lose money if one stop-out erases ten winners.
| Style | Typical win-rate pattern | What must hold true |
|---|---|---|
| Trend following | Lower (often below 50%) | Winners much larger than losers |
| Mean reversion / scalping | Higher | Losses kept small; costs stay low |
| Swing trading | Middle range | Balanced reward-to-risk |
Reading profit factor
Profit factor is gross profit divided by gross loss. Below 1.0 loses money. Around 1.0-1.3 is thin, and a small rise in spread or slippage can erase it. Roughly 1.3-2.0 is plausible for a robust approach. Figures of 3 or higher, especially with a win rate above 80%, should make you suspicious.
